Harrison's drug drop box is located at the Village Hall: W5298 State Rd 114, Harrison, WI. HOURS: M-F 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Improper disposal of medications, like flushing or tossing them in the garbage, can have consequences for both people, pets, and the environment:
- Water contamination: Flushed medications can end up in lakes, rivers, and drinking water. Wastewater treatment plants aren’t designed to filter out pharmaceutical chemicals, so medications like antibiotics, antidepressants, and painkillers can linger in the water supply.
- Harm to wildlife: These chemicals can disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Studies have shown changes in the behavior, reproduction, and growth of fish and amphibians exposed to pharmaceutical waste.
- Accidental poisoning: Medications left in homes can be found by children or pets, leading to accidental ingestion and poisoning.
- Drug misuse and overdose: Unused medications, especially opioids, are a major source of drug misuse. Many people who misuse prescription drugs get them from friends or family members who didn’t dispose of them properly.
